Younger Self & Imagination

Younger Self & Imagination

I tell my people all the time that there is no behind! They should work at their own pace! They should do what they can when they can! They should do it *their way*! But if *I* fall behind, or if I adapt a thing to suit me? I feel all kinds of omgdoom. I'm pretty sure its a holdover from a difficult childhood.

As a kind of antidote to that, I'm playing April Love Letters by my own rules, which  means I write when I can, and if I'm feeling 'love letter', I write a love letter, but if I feel like exploring the prompt in a different way, I do that. Whether I write on the assigned day or not, you know what? I'm WRITING. Whether I engage the prompts one at a time or five at a time, you know what? I'm ENGAGING.

It's kind of nice to give myself a spoonful of my own medicine.

***

Younger Self.

I am *mostly* skipping "Younger Self". I want you to know that because I'm proud of it. I'm proud that instead of knuckling under and just doing it or skipping it and dropping out of the challenge altogether, I am acknowledging that for me, right now, this is too private a prompt to explore. It is an act of self love to say to you "Yes, I have a younger self, as do we all, and yes, I am in touch with her, but no. I will not share her with you at this time. Not now. Not yet." She deserves my utmost protection, and while I am a total advocate for authenticity and a believer in the power of vulnerability, I am also learning *boundaries*, and she deserves good ones. I will admit to trying. I opened up my MacJournal (great software, by the way) and started to type, but the stuff that came out was very painful, very raw, and not for mass consumption. I have promised myself (and her) that I will circle back at some point, but for now, I'm letting her stay where she is, in a deeply armoured blanket fort tucked away in a corner of my soul, clutching her Raggedy Anne doll and reading books.

I included her in my upcoming Life Book lesson in which I explored a story about a creative wound that happened when I first began drawing. The resulting lesson is beautiful, and its one I'm deeply proud of.

Imagination

My mother used to tell me I didn't have one, but if only she knew that whenever I was being abused, I would slip easily into a whole other world in which I lived in a cabin in a grove of trees. If only she knew that this sacred place was inhabited by helpers - a woman I call Silver who would bathe me in a crystal clear pool of water before dressing me in something pure and white and ankle length. If only she knew that when I looked like I was 'checked out', I was really 'over there', engaged in some deeply satisfying gardening or wandering among the pines.

My imagination wasn't accessible for things like writing fiction or drawing pictures because it was too busy keeping me alive. It wasn't readily apparent from the outside looking in, but it was very active - magically active. Later I discovered that this was a kind of 'shamanic' initiation. I'd begun journeying spontaneously in the manner that shamans do, and the place I imagined was really an inner temple - a sacred place within my internal landscape that is still with me to this day.

These days, I will admit that my imagination is not my best friend. I have to work very hard not to allow it to run away with me. It engages in all kinds of 'worst scenario' type 'day dreaming', and it is a source of intense anxiety. I'm *trying* to befriend it through my art practice, but for the most part, what I need right now is to turn it off or turn it to other things - dreams of the soft, gentle kind.

When I try to imagine where I'll be in a year, two years, five years, well. That's all just a little too terrifying for me right now. Instead, I use it to come up with lessons for the classes I teach, and over the last several weeks, I've developed a step by step system to assist artists in accessing their own internal landscape through art journaling. This feels like a much better use of my imagination than the thing it does where it conjures up every damned thing that could possibly go wrong.

effyspectrum1This spread is an example of what happens when you engage this process. I've come up with clear steps to take that will allow you to spiral in to, not only getting a grip on what's going on within you, but also what *gifts* it has to offer you. At some point I expect to do a longer workshop that goes into greater detail, but for now, this technique is making its debut in Spectrum 2016 as part of a greater collaborative e-course.The class starts soon, and I hope to see you there.

In Other News

I resurrected my newsletter today. It's one of those things that got lost in the move. When I was deep in the process of dealing with the experience of being evicted after my landlady got married, and moving house before I felt ready, the newsletter felt like too much to handle. I didn't want to come to anyone with OMGDOOM WOE AND AWFUL. So I kept that pretty much too myself (and on social media where my tribe fully expects me to be absolutely crystal clear about how much things suck when they suck) and let the newsletter gather dust.

It felt *amazing* this morning when, after I sent it out, a bunch of you hit reply to welcome me back. You really are the bomb, you know. Thank you.

If you thought it was dead, and therefore, unsubscribed, or if you had no idea I even HAD one because I really suck at making that known, well, here's the subscribe link.

And that's all she wrote.

At least, for now. :)

I love you!

So Much Awesome & A Few Dabs Of Blue

So Much Awesome & A Few Dabs Of Blue

If my life weren't a mixed palette of brights and blues, it would probably not feel like my life. I mean, I'm an artist. Colour is inevitable and no one loves boring, right? Especially not me.

Little things bite me in the ass on a regular basis. Ways I've been hurt. Wounds that I thought were closed start to seep a little. Reminders of things I'd rather forget.

Dabs of blue.

I have become better and better at sitting with the blueness in a state of surrender and trust. It will pass. It all passes eventually. And magentas come into play. Or that sunset orange that I can't get enough of. And the blue will shift from a Payne's Gray tint to a grinning, gregarious teal.

But, if I'm being honest, I have to tell you - when I'm in the harder, colder blues, I want to disappear. Pack up the business (and the busyness). Throw out the art supplies. Dismantle the altars. Run away from home. This is old tape, though, and it isn't a reasonable response to anything. The urge to shrink, to go dark, is an old coping mechanism that I wish to dispense with. And here's another thing I should probably mention: it doesn't work. It makes things worse. So, no. Not gonna go dark.

Instead? I aim to shine. Puff up and proud and go big and fucking shine.

So, here's some shiny.
