Book Of Days 2019 – Meet Your Teachers + Giveaway – Day Three!

This is DAY THREE of MEET YOUR TEACHERS! Please click here to see Day One if you are just hearing about this fabulous collaborative e-course and want to know how it came to be!

Every day between now and November 1st, I’ll be giving you an opportunity to win a seat in Book of Days 2019 and introducing you to my guest artist teachers so you can get to know them before we begin.

Cary Cutler ScholesI’m a Virginia Mama (and grandma now, too!). I live with our 14 year old son, husband, 2 cats and 1 huge dog. I grew up in Northern Idaho and Southern Arizona. I have a Bachelor’s degree in English (which I finished almost 25 years after I started!). Luckily, I’ve mostly been a stay-at-home mom. I struggle with major anxiety and depression, which I find hinders and helps my art. I get comments regularly like, “Your girls look so sad!” or “why aren’t they ever smiling?” I find that every face I produce has it’s own personality, and, like actual people, aren’t always portrayed with a huge smile. (I get accused of having a serious RBF!) I have always loved creating things, but really didn’t start arting seriously about 6 years ago. There are a ton of ways to produce art, but I think my favorite is with graphite and acrylics.  I am self-taught (well, I have watched many artists work, taken hundreds of classes, but no professional training).  I have many artistic influences which include Effy Wild, Tam LaPorte, Jane Davenport, and Kara Bullock (just a few of my favs!).

“My art journal is the place I know I can create, quickly, or in a longer process, and it really doesn’t matter if there are “mistakes”. If worst comes to worst, I can turn the page and start fresh.  I have learned from lessons with Effy that the background matters, so I have really taken to using song lyrics and phrases to scribble in the background. It adds so much emotion and really brings the entire piece together.”

Cary will be featured in April 2019! In the meantime, you can find her on Facebook here, Instagram here, and YouTube here.

I love Cary because she has an immediately identifiable style that comes across so clearly to my eyes. Her portraits are deceptively simple, beautiful, and meaningful. She brings a wealth of humour to the table as a teacher as well!

 Iris Fritschi-Cussens

My name is Iris, I am a London-based mixed media artist. I live in the heart of Bloomsbury with my beautiful family (husband, 2 kids & 1 cat).

My passion is art journaling for self-expression and self-discovery. I love inspiring people to look further and go deeper through art, so they can really follow their inner creativity.

You can often find me at my art desk pursuing my many arty interests like art journaling, abstract painting, playing with art supplies and making mini journals.

Currently my favourite art supplies are: fluorescent pink everything, ultramarine blue, off white & teal paint, Daniel Smith watercolours in Lunar Black, a brayer, black fineliner and red pencil.

My art journal is the place I go to express and discover myself. It’s a place for the expression of my feelings, artistic discovery, experimentation, play and to simply BE.

Iris will be featured in May 2019! In the meantime, you can find her on her website here, on her blog here, and on Instagram here.

I love Iris because her style is extremely honest and accessible. We have run in the same circles for years, and it has been a pleasure to watch her find and develop her voice!

Amanda Fall is a truth-speaker, love-believer, and heart-on-her-sleever. She’s the proud creator, editor, and publisher of The Phoenix Soul, a fiercely indie digital magazine and community.

“My art journal is the place I remember who I was, and discover who I’m meant to be.”

Amanda will pop up like a sweet surprise throughout the year! In the meantime, you can find her on Patreon, Instagram, and Facebook.

I’m excited to feature Amanda in this year’s BOD because she is a total Polymath who has mastered a variety of creative modes of expression. She is the creator of one of my favourite magazines, The Phoenix Soul, and she has a style that means we aren’t spending hours and hours hunched over the arty table.

Book Of Days 2019 – Meet Your Teachers + Giveaway – DAY TWO

This is DAY TWO of MEET YOUR TEACHERS!

This is DAY TWO!

On deck this morning are Tangie Baxter, Marieke Blokland, and Marit Barentsen. Tangie and Marieke are ‘main’ guests – my all stars, and Marit is a bonus guest – a rising star. Read on!

Tangie Baxter

I work full time as an artist, graphic designer and online workshop instructor (I work with both digital and mixed-media). One of my biggest passions is watercolor (& urban sketching) and I push myself to use the medium past the traditionally accepted methods including in mixed-media projects. I also love playing in Photoshop, getting my hands covered in paint, collecting vintage ephemera, books, and of course, globes. I’ve been published in several Stampington publications, scrapbooking magazines and art books.  I am a firm believer that the true joy of creating is in the process and to begin any creative endeavor is to have already created something beautiful because you honored your divine gift to create.

“My Art journal is the place I experiment with art mediums and my own thoughts and feelings. My journals are a place of discovery, freedom and wild exploration.”

Tangie will be featured in February 2019!. In the meantime you can find her store here, her newsletter here, her YouTube here, and her Instagram here.

I love Tangie because she beautiful melds digital and paper art journaling in a way that I find both inspiring and liberating. Her teaching style is conversation, and totally accessible. She even makes Photoshop seem doable!

Marieke Blokland

Hi! I am Marieke Blokland (1980) from the Netherlands, a self-proclaimed art supplies geek with a passion for art journaling. I love to play with art supplies and express myself visually. My quirky work is often graphical and illustrative. Sometimes raw, sometimes cute and often a little edgy. I love the art from Picasso, Francis Bacon and Grayson Perry a lot, but I can also feel really inspired by watching a Tim Burton movie, and looking at Polish movie posters, old Japanese woodblock prints, African masks, Russian folk art, children’s book illustration, and street art.

“My art journal is the place where I can explore and express myself freely and develop my artistic skills. I explore colors, shapes, typography, composition and idea’s, but also my emotions, my opinion, my beliefs, etc.”

Marieke will be featured in March 2019! In the meantime you can find her website here, her Instagram here, her YouTube here, and her Facebook here.

I love Marieke because her work is bright and vibrant. Her style of teaching is straightforward, and she has a knack for teaching *quickly*. I adore the way she expresses herself on the page.

Marit is a passionate art journaler, mixed media artist, art instructor and creative text writer from the Netherlands. From her mom, who is a writer, she inherited a passion for words and the trait to look at the world with fairytale eyes. From her dad, who is a great amateur photographer and more of an analytic and visual type, she learned to not only look but really ‘see,’ and how to choose and frame subjects to get the right picture.

The combination of the above almost automatically lead Marit to become a teacher in art and right from the beginning, her art showed a combination of images and words.

After art school, Marit went on studying on a more theoretical level. Years later, when she worked as a creative digital designer, she picked up working with ‘the real stuff’ again. It was, however, not until she discovered ‘art journaling’ that her art took a big flight… Marit re-discovered the combination of words and images in a way that truly combines all the different sides in her.

Marit’s offering will pop up all spontaneous like at some point during the year, but in the meantime, you can find her on her website here, Facebook here, and her blog here.

I love Marit because she knows how to create and maintain a practice that obviously wonderfully serves her. Her work is multifaceted, layered, and so interesting to look at!

Book Of Days 2019 – Meet Your Teachers + Win A Seat!

Good morning, loves! I am so excited to announce that Book Of Days 2019 is in the works and will be opened for registration on November 1st. This year long art journaling e-course will feature full length lessons by me, Effy Wild, but for the first time ever, it will also include a delicious assortment of my favourite art journaling teachers, including both some names you might recognize, and hand-selected emerging teachers that you might not!

I’ve been teaching this program since 2012, and it has morphed quite a bit over the years in order to accommodate my ability to teach other programs as well. This year, 2018, I finally hit a wall and knew that I couldn’t teach this alone anymore. The enormity of it is just too great for one person to sustain.

Switching gears and inviting guest teachers means you not only get everything I offer, but you get everything *they* offer, too, making for a total immersion in art journaling that will provide you with plenty of new techniques to try, and new ways of approaching the journal. It also means I can work more deeply on my other programs, like Moonshine 2019 (coming soon) and A Year of Rumi (coming soon!)

Alumni in Book Of Days will be happy to note that despite the increased amount of content and value, the price will remain the same! WHAT?!?! Yeah!!

Get more details by clicking here, but remember that registration doesn’t open until November 1st!

Every day between now and November 1st, I’ll be introducing you to my guest artist teachers so you can get to know them before we begin.

Not only that, but every time I come here to introduce you to a new teacher, I will also be offering you the chance to win a seat in class! YES!! Details on the giveaway will come after the introductions. Think of it a little like opening the card before you unwrap the present. ;)

On deck this morning are Sarah Trumpp, Kiala Givehand, and Shai Bearden. Sarah and Kiala are ‘main’ guest teachers (my all stars) and Shai Bearden is a bonus guest teacher (a rising star).

Sarah Trumpp

Sarah Trumpp is a weird muppety girl living in the wilds of New York with her husband and an increasing gaggle of children that may or may not actually be hers.  She is a mixed media artist, yoga instructor, volunteer firefighter, and all-around goofball.  Sarah thinks you’re awesome, and she’s always right.

“My art journal is the place I try new things, keep track of things, and work through things.  It’s also the place I do magical things, mystical things, and straight up weirdo things.”

Sarah will be featured in January of 2019, and throughout the year with water-colour tutorials (three of them!). In the meantime, you can find her on her website here, on Etsy, where she sells her incredifabulous stencils here, and on Facebook here.

I love her because she encourages me to embrace and explore imagery that might be off the beaten path. She inspires my inner weird girl AND she comes up with innovative ways to combine and use different mediums in the journal.

 Kiala Givehand

Kiala Givehand is a published poet, printmaker, bookbinder, fountain pen collector, and radical nomad. She believes in surrounding herself with ordinary humans who live extraordinary lives, gathering with people who make her laugh & love uncontrollably, and living a life intent on cultivating happiness.A double Capricorn, ambivert who grew up on the Gulf Coast of Florida, Kiala learned to appreciate and respect hurricanes, humidity, and the transformational powers of the sun, the moon, and the ocean.

She holds six academic degrees in various subjects from various Universities, but the one she cherishes most is her M.F.A. from Mills College where she found and fell in love with Book Art.

Kiala says… “Stories connect us and highlight what is unique about us. I’ve always been a storyteller, relying on words to convey feeling, energy, and information. Learning to make handmade journals changed how I connect & communicate and gave me a way to empower others and encourage them to share their stories. The scribbles in my journals always begin or end with words. I add color and imagery to visually share how I see the world. Art can look multi-layered and complex while being extremely simple and approachable. I use paper, color, mark making, and wordplay to create tangible versions of my stories in hopes of inspiring you to do the same.”

Kiala will also be featured in August 2019! In the meantime, you can find her on YouTube here, on her website here, and on Instagram here.

I love her because she beautifully combines several of my loves – tarot, mysticism, and magical record keeping with art journaling in ways that inspire me to ohh and ahhh. She is a super thorough teacher, too, leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that her students make the most out of her classes.

Bonus Guest Artist Shai Bearden

Park hippie, part geek, part rocker chick with some serious Dolly Parton sass, Shai blends art, herbalism, self-love + spiritual musings with kickass empowerment + a hell-yeah attitude.  She is the spunky and spirited CEO of Wild Sister Magazine and the Wild Sisterhood, who has a fierce passion for helping women discover their unique beauty + strength + truth.

“My art journal is the place I, as an Aspie, sort out and express feelings I don’t always understand.”

Shai’s offering will pop up all spontaneous like at some point during the year, but in the meantime, you can find her on her website here, Facebook here, and on instagram here.

I love her because she is not just an absolutely gorgeous artist, but she is a fearless advocate for mental health awareness, not to mention the CEO of an inspiring magazine that provides incredible content to Wild Sisters like you and I! She also oozes optimism, and that is something I need a little more of in my life!
